Veterans Day

After a wonderful assembly where the kids learned about the history of Veterans Day, what the POW/MIA Flag represented, how to properly honor the flag while it is in motion, and how Taps came to be, we were lucky to have two veterans come to our room and talk to the kids about their experience serving in our military.

Both Michaelle's father and Heather's father are veteran's and were in attendance at the assembly and in our room afterwards. Michaelle's father is a former Colonel who served in the United States Air Force as a Navigational Officer on the KC-135 Stratotanker's. He talked to the kids about what it was like to train, fly, and help protect our nation.

Heather's father is a former Green Beret - US Army Special Forces - and he talked to the kids about some of his experiences, especially highlighting the teamwork skills that are necessary for his line of work.

Both men shared some of their experiences of serving in not only the Persian Gulf, but also Bosnia and a few other theaters that the US has deployed our troops. They built in a wonderful anti-drug message for the kids and warned them of the dangers that it would have on future career options.

The kids had a lot of questions for both veterans which they each fielded very well, giving the kids a glimpse into their lives while they served. It was an honor to have both of them in the classroom to share their experiences. Thank you for not only your time in our class, but for the years of service you put in for our nation.

As part of the assembly, two our student's who had participated in the Patriot's Pen Essay had the honor of reading their essay's to the school and to our visiting veterans. The writing prompt was "What Would I Tell Our Founding Father's."

All the students stayed engaged in the words of wisdom from our veterans the entire time they were here.

Taking a look through some of the notes of an Air Force Officer.
