Anchor Charts
As many of you noticed during our conferences, our room is being filled with these charts along the walls. These are referred to as "anchor charts" and they help give students a visual reference to previous writing lessons that took place in class and some of the ideas that they could be focusing on while they are writing.
While we may have joked that your student was "cheating" during conferences for referring to one of these posters when asked what realistic fiction social action meant, that's exactly what your student was supposed to do. By giving the kids these visual reminders, they are constantly reminding themselves of something to check in their writing and possibly helping to inspire some new ideas.
The charts cover a range of topics, from what the writing process looks like to how to brainstorm ideas. There are also charts for how to make their writing a little more clear and charts to help them on what to say and not say when working with a partner.
With the exception of the writing process chart, all of them are made with ideas brainstormed in class and many of them contain samples of the students writing. This helps keeps it authentic for the students.
