Dealing with Grief

All death is a tragedy. It’s even more so when it strikes a child, especially one so close to home. By now you have most likely heard the news. A student who was part of the Pewaukee School District from the 1st through 5th grade was struck and killed by a train yesterday morning while walking to school. I’ll leave the details to the newspapers, but as you already know, many of our students knew this child, were in classes with him, and called him a friend.

Today we spent our morning talking with the kids about the tragic accident. We let them talk to one another, share stories and memories. Guidance counselors from both PLE and ASA Clark were here throughout the day to talk with any and all kids who needed someone to listen. Many of our kids took advantage of it so we had a pretty easy morning academic wise.

There is never any explanation that will be good enough to explain the loss of a child. There will be words of comfort, memories, shared experiences, and perhaps some lesson we can take away from it all. I’ll leave you to discuss it as a family with your child. Take care.
