Fusion/September Update

Greetings - the following is the same thing that is posted on my Horizon School "Fusion" page. We've been having some trouble uploading announcements and different activities to that page, so keep an eye out here still for the most updated announcements.

September Events
Greetings and welcome to September. We are well underway now and the minions are starting to settle into their routine now. Hopefully most of their jitters and worries are under control. 6th grade isn’t as scary as it seems.

Anyways – here are some things that are coming up!

MAPS Testing: MAP is a standardized test that our district uses to help gauge where our students are at in regards to their math, reading and language usage. The students will be taking all three tests in the upcoming weeks. The tests are all computer based and take roughly an hour to complete each one. We’ll be sharing the results during our first quarter conferences together.

Edmodo: Each student signed up for an Edmodo account this past week. Students are able to use it to ask classmates questions or myself. They are not able to send messages directly to one another and every note that they put on Edmodo ends up in my gmail account. Mr. Finn is always watching :) We will be using Edmodo to upload a Microsoft Word document nightly that lists their homework. This can be used as a reference should they forget their assignment notebook at school.

Booklogs: Students reading homework every night now includes reading an independent book for at least 20 minutes and writing a response to it. They can make predictions about events, pretend to be a character and explain what is going on or explain how the setting is playing a role in the book. Obviously, these are only some options (see the top of their booklog page for more prompts). We do want to our students to try and move away from summaries. It is a great skill to have but we are going to push them beyond them to help open them up as writers this year. Try to encourage their creative side in this process, it will pay dividends down the road.
