Clearing out buck-thorn was one of the main tasks for a good portion of our students on their restoration project. The student's did a wonderful job digging around in the trees by the river to identify ones that did not belong. They proceeded to take them down using saws and loppers.
Another group worked where a previous class had already cleared. This group of girls put down mulch and then worked on planting some native plants.
A final group of three boys got muddy as they worked very close to the river planting certain types of plants that thrive in muddy, wet conditions next to rivers.
The day was capped off by Eddy, our friendly park manager, giving the kids Gatorade, water, and a snack for free. It was quite unexpected, but the kids really appreciated it!
Finally, a HUGE thank you to our four parent volunteers. You guys made this trip possible and we are very appreciative of you donating your time to join our class. We hope you had a good time with us!
